There are more than one but a number of advantages of electronic ballast compared to simple magnetic versions. You will receive a better light yield – what will reduce energy costs – and electronic ballast are less prone for water damage. In addition, a gentle startmode extends the lifetime of your bulb significant. Above this, electronic ballast often offers the possibility to manage more than only one performance level. These „dimmable“ (better: switchable) ballasts supplies the owner with the ability to switch from eg. 250W to 400W or from 400W to 600W. So you wouldnt have to change the bulb if you want to change power in dependence of the growing phase. But, there is still additional scope for further innovation: the noted dutch supplier Gavita with their remarkably line Digistar

This Digistars are available in two versions: one for the range from 250W up to 440W, which offers switchable power of 250W, 275W, 400W and 440W, and one for the range from 300W up to 660W, with 300W, 400W, 600W, 660W as switchable levels. Trained growers may be curious about some strange levels as 440W or 660W. What’s the big deal with these
offbeat special features? The slightly under- or overperformance are suitable for customized regulation during the growing phases. You can safe money by using e.g 300W instead of 400W for early growing stage as well as you can boost the plants by using 440W in later phase. But, be carefull: you cant run a 400W bulb with 660W. Boostlevels are made for the „lamp in the middle“. You can boost a 250W to 275W or lower a 400W to 300W, but too much would means death of the bulb by „electric shock“.

Plant breeding without any medium? No more mudslinging with sodden earth? And – despite this – best root growth and ideal nutrient uptake ?
This can be achieved by aeroponic systems – a method similar to hydroponics growing – whichs works with exposed roots. This allows the direct application of nutrient solutions directly attached to the roots, and thus optimize the absorption of fertilizers. This is enabled by root chambers with supporting systems, where the roots can hold. Fertilizers are given by a sprayer or a dropper without reducing or even limiting the important supply of oxygen . Aeroponic is a rather modern field of breeding, which was devolped for space issues about 30 years ago.

Currently we can offer two layouts of the „Aero Grow Kits“ by Aeroponic Systems: for 9 and for 24 plant. Both system provides customizable root supports, what makes it suitable for even shorter roots… a feature not every available aeroponic system can afford. A pump let the fertilizer/water solution circulate and pass it to the plant by a dripper. So you got a best-practise supply of water and nutrients.

Dont mind waterlogging or adjunvtive root rot: abundant water can drain directly and wont damages the plant in any way.

The breeding of cuttings is one of the most delicate aspects of growing and often leads to growers frustration, because it is possible to learn by trail and error but,nevertheless , its very annoying to see a hopeful project die a wretched death. It is, in particular, waterlogging that cause cuttings to die and – on the contrary side – the lack of water.

These dangers can be nearly excluded by using the new Eazy Plug System. The pellets are wrapped with foil and watered in advance, what would do for the first few days of your breeding and what makes additional watering dispensable. The pallets are made of turf and coco and pre-filled with the most important fertilizers. So you even have to give any nutrients for the first 1-3 weeks. This composition also provides a most suitable drainage and reduce the danger of an over-supply of water after the first period. In addition Eazy Plug pellets are pre-buffered concerning the PH and the EC numbers. The values stay constant even if you add fertilzers or water. So you can spare frequent checks and adjustments. So another standard source of problems is dead and gone.

A few weeks ago, we introduced some new versions of standard cooltubes to you. Today, theres is a postscript: This time with high-efficient cooltubes and spudnik reflektors made by PrimaKlima. Both are suitable to mount with standard exhaust systems and reduce the quantity of warm air, which could damage or eventually destroy your plants up to the whole breed.

PrimaKlima Cooltubes

Additional outer reflector wings are standard since a few years. Beyond that, the cooltubes of PrimaKlima are made of high-quality Miro9. This material offers an ideal of 97 degree of reflection and in consequent a best rate of efficiency. Hammertoned in the basic principle, this reflectors have a special coating, which avoids the notorious tarnishing and therefore annoying reducing of light reflection. In addition, PrimaKlima utilize borosilicate for the tube itself, which prevents the glass from becoming yellow. That would cause a lack of efficiency, too. PrimaKlima cooltubes are available with 49cm of length and – for smaller tents and boxes – with 40cm. Both are too mount with 127mm hoses for the 125mm connection.

PrimaKlima Spudnik

Spudniks (sic) by Primaklima, as well as the tubes, are expected for the use in growtents with light systems producing critical heat, but outdo the latter by its better reflection angle. Like the tubes, the Spudnik reflectors got Miro9 reflection inlays and show the same ideal features for successful breeding. There are two connection sizes available: 125mm for standard fan / filter systems and 150mm if you want to use a more powerful fan.

The Homebox by Eastside Impex are first choice Growtents if you are want to have a solid Box with all essentials for a decent price. But, like Growboxes in general, these tents are limited in two important aspects of plant breeding. On the one hand, you are restricted on the very size of the box, on the other side, the frame of these tents is not made for particular heavy equipment. The first problem was solved by Eastside Impex by the design of the easy-to-use modular Homeboxsystems.. But there are also good news for heavyweight-growers with a affectation for rather solid equipment like silencers, high-end ventilation and massy filters: Homebox Hercules frame enhancements

No more stepping and kicking on precious ballast, fans or meters: This board give you easy access to every corner of the tent. You can use this extension with every tent of 2 meter height. Dont give a chance to chaos!

There was a lot of activity in our growshop during the last weeks (we will provide more about this in a newsletter in a few days. But meanwhile, we want to introduce to a few new models of cooltube reflectors, which are meant to give help for some special cases.

Cooltubes are the first choice to discharge bulb-made heat from the growroom to avoid problems with your plants. Therefore, the tube was simply mounted within the exhaust hose. Unfortunately, that was not possible inside of rather small boxes like the Homebox XS or the DarkRoom 40, because the cooltube itself got 49cm of length, which would not fit in tents like these. Also growers with individuell rooms of much bigger size got problems, if they were to use more than only one bulb, because they would be in need of a separate cooltube for each bulb. Imagine the chaos of tubes, bulbs, ballasts and hoses. These new cooltube are adressed to annoyed growers of both nature.

Cool Tube 30cm w. 125mm Connections

Most suitable for use within rather small growboxes, which refuse the mounting of a standard tube. 125mm connections on both side are ideal for fan/filter-combinations of rather small performance, which are recommend for a small Homebox or DarkRoom. Gone the days of wild constructions just for the use of a cooltube and a lot of problems with obstructed in- and outlets. This small cooltube makes an end to chaos.

Cool Tube Double 89cm – 125mm und 150mm

These special tubes are adressed to growers with big growrooms even of individuell nature. Especially user of flood-tide system with rather longish set-ups will give value to the possibilities of using two bulb with each tube and to connect the whole system in a row. That is ideal to save meters of hose and to avoid common sources of trouble. The 125mm type is sufficient for most exhaust solutions of rather small size. If you are going to raise a big cultivation and to mount more than one bulb in row, you ought to think about a fan/filter-system of higher performance and maybe the 150mm solution (depends on the size of the connectors of your fan and filter).
Unfortunately, there is a need of a separate ballast for each bulb.

A rather unwelcome side effect in growtents or growrooms is the noise made by the fan. Even if you use powerful equipment, a placement close to your bed would disturb your sleep and annoying neighbours with loud humming is probably not the best idea if you want to keep in good neighbourhood. Therefore, what can we do to reduce noise pollution?

Choose your fan carefully

Some fellow homegrower tries to get on the safe side by mounting a overpowered fan in relation to the capacity of their growrooms. Sometimes that makes sense, especially if you place your tent in rather suboptimal surrounding like a roof chamber or laundry facility. But dont exaggerate! Powerful fans are significant louder and you wont be in need of a exhaust system manage 1000m³/h and more for a XS-Growtent.

Mount your fan accurately

Take care your fan is proper mounted. Its important to avoid vibrations transferred to the poles of the tent in particular. This would amplify noise especially if it is carried over to the floor making your neighbour tall, green and angry. Best practise: mount your fan free-hanging to the top structure of your tent without any direct contact to poles.

Insulated hose

Much noise is coming right through the hoses, which connect fan with filter or even the outlets. More than a few growers prefer isolated ducting by using special hoses with mineral wool inside – like it is used with roof structure in building industry. These hoses are heat-proof, so its not a problem to use it even with powerfull bulbs like 600W HPS. Be careful: the wool is similar to glass wool and could make your hands swollen if used careless.

Silencer / sound absorber

If a isoleted hose wouldnt do, you may thing about of using a special silencer (inline silencer). These absorbers are looking just like silencer for motorcycles and are easy to mount between e.g fan and outlet. On the other hand, silencer are rather heavy of weight and simple boxes often does not provide poles sturdy enough for this kind of equipment. Meanwhile, some tent producers take about that. For example, growlabs are designed to handle up to 45kg.

Soundproofing fan

Best of all practise: fans with noise protection. In that case, you do not have only a fan, but also a wooden or metal box with foamed isolation. This concept avoid outgoing noise and can be taken as high-end solution for noise reduction. Unfortunately, this kind of fans are rather expensive and of significant dead load. So you better place it on the ground rather than on the tent structure itself.

For typical irrigation tasks in greenhouse, growroom or particula in garden areas you would have to spend a great deal of physical work (remember the wheight of a full watering can!) and constant maintenance. The latter is the bigger problem during holiday or even short trips, because not every neighbour is reliable the way as you want him or her to be. Moreover you are in need of handling water close to electric equipment, what could cause some troubles in your gastric area. So it is time to think about a full automatic irrigation system allows you to enjoy your grow without hard work 😉

Ideal: no power connection needed

Existing tension between open electric mountings like ballasts, multi-sockets, etc) and humidity expose the need for a particular power-free solution. Up to this time, that was not practicable by the need for pump and – for instance – electronic timers.

Autopot single pot system.

Autopot irrigation systems following a different way. This technology abandon the need for power supply, what is ideal for rather moist greenhouses but also for outlying patches of your garden. In addition theres is no need for a pump, because of the higher level the tank should be placed. Thanks to Newton, this will cause irrigation only by pressure. Water will be stored in kind of membrane and only given to plants if necassary. After the membrane ran dry, pressure will cause a fresh supply right after.

Double it: Autopot Easy2Grow.

Modular system

Pot solutions by Autopot are designed consequent modular. This allows the gardener to assamble a system fully aligned to the very circumstances. There are to basic variants:

  • 1Pot – single pot
  • Easys2Grow – double pot

Based on these two blocks you can assamble a watering system most ideal for your growroom.

Beside this pot solutions, Autopot also offers a system for outdoor patches: AQUAbox Spyder with its main unit the AQUABOX. It is simply to dig into the soil and to connect to a suitable tank-port.

Growrooms like HomeBox or others are used by self supporters without adequate possibilities for cultivation area – most of them are urban dwellers. Growrooms are perfect for a regulated grow without the big deal of pollution (water, soil, nutrients, etc) other method would bring. Better than growing on your window board as your grandma always did. Equipent like grow bulbs and ventilation can be arranged most suitable on poles and clambs explicit designed for that purpose. These tents are made for growing in your living room.

As the years gone by and the producers of famous HomeBoX growtents were relentless to enhance their product and did so in co-operation with the important US-Producer „Everest Garden Supply“ … the birth of the next generation of growrooms: the Growlab.

HomeBox heir: Growlab

Growlab does not start over with a complete new concept, but enhance an established system to ease growers day to day desaster and provide an extra of possibilities for equipment. An acquainted problem of
previous tents is gone now: zippers are much more robust and are also to handle for rather commonsensible users.

If you felt limited by the construction poles of former versions, this matter is also gone. Up to 45kg of fans, filters, bulbs and timers may be added to your Growlab. The luminous reflectance of the growlabs inner surface was improved again to avoid stray light. Remarkable: Growlabs thermoreflection allows only 3% of heat to dispense. 97% thermoprotection is the result.

Almost a cottage

Growers can select between a wide range of different box sizes. For small tasks like growing seedlings there are rather small boxes available (e.g GL40 40cmx40cmx120cm). Bigger tents like the huge GL290 with almost three meters of length and width seems to be habitable.


A very special feature is unfortunately not part of each Growlab size: GL80, GL120 and GL145 provides a window to check your grow without entering the box itself. Other versions are planned to equip with this nice feature in future.

Most of bulbs, which are suitable for growing plants, are not particulary easy to connect. There is no way to simply plug in, but you would be in need of a separate ballast of matching power. These ballast are necassary to limit the electricity and protect the bulb from damage. This is essentiel in particular if you use HPS-Systems, but also for some kinds of fluorescent bulbs, which are widely used for seedlings or cuttings. Its not important for CFL-Bulbs, which got build-in ballast-like technology.

Important for all systems: take care to use cable end sleeves to the wires to avoid system failures and damages, which are not covered by warranty.

Ballasts for fluorescent lamps

Ballasts for low-power CFLs are known as „sockets“, because they consist not only of a power-regulator, but also of a reflector. They are easy to mount by an appliance coupler. Take care you are choose the correct length and adapters, if you are not going to buy an complete set solution. There will be no way to use a bulb, which wont fit explicit to the socket.

Ballasts for HPS-Bulbs

Power supply for a HPS is a little bit more „gamy“. You will have to do the wiring by a diagram printed on the ballast itself. It is not recommendable for rookies and non-electricians, because there are not details except the diagram. Most countries do not allow to provide instructions by security reasons and you would have to get in contact with a specialist, if you are not familiar with electric mountings. Just one thing: if you own a two-part ballast with external ignitor, take care of fit the screws between ignitor and solenoid. Sticking on would not do!

Things are more easy with electronic ballast, which have a static power connection. But growers will do the part to the reflector by theirselves. There are usually couplers for the reflector, but most reflector does not provide a suitable counterpart.

Special case CFL

no need for a ballast: CFL bulbs

Beside the negative storys about CFL’s you can read in your daily papers: if you want to leave a separate ballast, there are nothing better then bulbs with build-in ballasts. Usually, there is an E40 socket, which allows a very fast mounting to every proper socket.
